Can wearing a wig make your hair fall out?

When it comes to wearing wigs, there are many advantages. Not only do they offer a quick and easy solution when you don't want to deal with your own hair, but they are also useful in protecting your natural hair from damage - until they aren't.

Traction alopecia is a type of hair loss caused by continuous pulling or pressure on the hair follicles. It can be developed by wearing certain types of wigs and other protection methods, making some black women more susceptible to this condition.

"Traction alopecia is a lifestyle disorder," says Dr. Elyse Love, a New York City dermatologist. "Biologically, black women are less likely to experience traction alopecia. However, hair care practices in the black community are more likely to include traction manipulation. Combing, heavy braids, long weaves and styling with white hair are common causes of traction alopecia."

Since many of us continue to spend a lot of time at home, there really isn't a better time to keep your natural hair in better shape by learning more about traction alopecia, not only how to treat it, but also how to prevent it from coming back.

That's why we spoke to Dr. Love, along with fellow board-certified dermatologist Dr. Crystal Aguh, who was featured in the traction alopecia-focused documentary Pretty Shouldn't Hurt, produced by un-ruly.com in partnership with Dark & Lovely, as well as TOBY XU, CEO and founder of FAYUAN Hair Products, to tell you everything you need to know.
